Foreign object debris (FOD) prevention in aircraft maintenance often depends on process discipline: tool control, visual inspections, work-area checks, and confirmation that equipment has been returned before an aircraft moves to its next stage.

BlueGPS adds another layer to that process: continuous location tracking of tools, parts, and measurement equipment inside the maintenance area.

Rather than relying only on a technician to confirm that every item has been returned, tagged assets report their position continuously. The system can then show whether a maintenance bay is clear or whether an item remains within the work area.

From Tool Control to Real-Time Tool Visibility

Traditional tool-control processes usually tell an MRO organization whether a tool has been issued or returned.

That does not necessarily tell the maintenance team where the tool is now.

BlueGPS uses micro BLE tags attached to tools and other assets. According to the solution specification, each tagged item reports its position every second. This creates a live view of where tracked assets are located without requiring a manual sign-in/sign-out sheet.

This changes the question at the end of a maintenance task.

Instead of asking:

“Have all the tools been checked back in?”

the system can help answer:

“Are any tracked tools still inside this aircraft maintenance area?”

Detecting a Potential FOD Risk Before Release

The BlueGPS FOD Detection System presents each work area as either clear or requiring attention.

For example, the interface shown in the solution overview displays one bay as “Clear – All tools stowed”, while another generates an “Action required” alert and identifies a specific tool near the aircraft’s right wing.

The intention is not to replace established FOD procedures. It is to provide another source of information before an aircraft or engine leaves the maintenance environment.

Maintenance teams can use location data to focus a final check on the area where an unaccounted-for item was last detected rather than searching an entire bay.

Two Locators Can Cover the Work Area

The packaged BlueGPS system uses two BLE Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) locators installed on the ceiling or another fixed structure. In this configuration, the locators are able to sense the presence (or not) of objects within the aircraft zone in the bay.

Angle of Arrival uses the direction from which a radio signal reaches a receiver to help calculate the position of a transmitting tag. In this application, the locators receive signals from BLE tags attached to tools and other equipment.

BlueGPS states that the two locators provide coverage across the work area while leaving the aircraft untouched. The locators are mounted out of the way and the system can be installed and calibrated during a single visit.

This makes the concept suitable for applications where an MRO organization wants location coverage without installing tracking hardware directly onto the aircraft.

An On-Site System Without a Cloud Dependency

The FOD package also includes a Cube Positioning Appliance.

Processing runs on site using a fanless appliance, so the system does not depend on a cloud connection for positioning. The BlueGPS platform then provides the tracking and reporting layer used to monitor assets and work areas.
